I send to you my wishes for a Happy Father's Day! The picture on
the left was taken in August 1993—just after I climbed
to the top of one of several outcroppings located in Hanging Rock State Park
(north of Winston-Salem, North Carolina). What a glorious day that was!
I pray that you take time from your daily routine to savour the wonders
of the amazing world that the GOOD LORD has created!
A couple of thoughts on this Father's Day—
It is difficult for me to believe that this will be my fifth Father's Day without my Dad.
Because I cannot be with my Dad physically on this special day, I will share it with
him in other ways. I will visit him at Arlington National Cemetery in the morning
and then head over to Nationals Park to watch the Washington Nationals play the Chicago White Sox.
Ironically, the last baseball my Dad and I watched together was between the White Sox and
the California Angels! Oh, how appropriate!
My one thought about my Dad today is that I wish I could spend some more time with him.
There are so many things I would like to tell him—things I have done since he's been gone,
places I been over the last five years, and how I managed all of the assets he left behind for
the family to enjoy. Mostly though, I would like a chance to speak with him about life—questions
I had not thought to ask him while he was still here—questions that had not occurred to me because
I not lived long enough to know to ask them.
I tell you these things because time is so short and so precious. I have
never wanted you and your sister to get to a point in your life when one day you say,
"oh, my—I have made a terrible mistake in not seeking out my father—and
now there is so little time left for us to spend together." Unfortunately, we cannot
go back in time and fix our past—we can only look forward and make choices about
how we wish our futures to be.
As always, my prayer is that that one day is soon. We have so much to offer each other. Until that
perfect day, may the GOOD LORD grant you strength to face your fears and courage to overcome whatever obstacles
lay in your path.
Much love to you on this Father's Day!
